OUR STORY
About Wa-Kesho CBO
Wa-kesho was founded in 2006 by a group of women in Kisauni District, Mombasa County, as a self-help group to promote women’s economic empowerment and strengthen their role in society. The organization was registered in the same year under the Ministry of East Africa Community, Labour and Social Protection, Department of Social Development.
In 2011, responding to growing community demand, Wa-kesho transitioned into a registered Community Based Organization (CBO), expanding its reach and strengthening its commitment to empowering vulnerable women and girls through practical skills development.
Our Mission & Vision
Wa-kesho envisions a society where women are socially and economically empowered and strives to be a leading organization in empowering women and the girl child through skills transfer and income-generating activities.
Our Journey
What began with a single sewing machine has grown into a thriving vocational training programme that has transformed the lives of thousands of girls. Over the years, Wa-kesho expanded from one sewing machine to seven, and later increased its capacity through support received in 2014 from Hazina ya Maendeleo ya Pwani. Today, the organization continues to provide vocational training, life skills, and practical opportunities that help beneficiaries build brighter futures.
Our Approach
We believe that practical skills create opportunities for lasting change. Our approach combines vocational training, skills transfer, and income-generating activities that enable beneficiaries to gain employable skills while building confidence and independence. Alongside technical training, participants also receive basic business management skills and practical experience through enterprise activities that support both learning and economic empowerment.
Working Together
Wa-kesho believes meaningful impact is achieved through collaboration rather than working in isolation. Since its inception, the organization has partnered with stakeholders who have provided material support, financial assistance, and capacity building to strengthen programmes and expand opportunities for beneficiaries. These partnerships continue to play an important role in helping Wa-kesho achieve its mission.
